The Centre for Green Economy Development, Nepal (CGED-Nepal) is a first of its kind joint private and civil society sector launched knowledge-based company registered in Nepal. It has been established by committed and knowledgeable individuals and institutions to develop, synthesize, share, and learn concepts, practices, learning and partnerships on green economic development strategies and approaches. It aims to carry out commissioned research, organize high level meeting and workshops and provide practical, comprehensive and accessible cum relevant knowledge. It will provide technical assistance to interested Government, non-government and private sector agencies in Nepal and other developing and least developed countries to prepare, plan and program country driven, sustainable and inclusive green and low carbon growth strategies, policies and action plans.
CGED-Nepal is representing the new environment, development and social agenda that is based on continuous synthesizing and acquiring new knowledge and devising tailored approaches for different developing countries. Established by a concerned, committed, accomplished and knowledgeable group of individuals, it aims to develop, share and work on the global, regional and national agenda of climate change, green economy, poverty, conservation and sustainable development based on the principles of good governance, sustainability and efficiency of the management of natural, human and financial capital.
The importance of green economy, environment sustainability and poverty reduction is manifest in the 17 UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) under the post 2015 Development Agenda.
Achieving the SDGs will largely depend on the success of the new regime of climate change; different sectors of work must converge and lead to transformative change. Poverty reduction, climate stabilization and maintenance of sustained flow of ecosystem goods and services are likely to remain major challenge of the new development agenda. These are some of the contexts and rationale for the establishment of CGED-Nepal.
CGED-Nepal has accumulated knowledge and experience in conducting integrated, transformative and trans-disciplinary research on topics ranging from Ecosystem based adaptation (EbA); Ecosystem-based DRR (EcoDRR) and Integrated and Participatory Watershed Management.
It has also been working on sustainable livelihoods by promoting natural products including medicinal and aromatic plants, bamboos and rattans. CGED-Nepal is specialized in regional and global networking with Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Climate Change organizations such as IPBES, IUCN, UNFCCC, and Ecosystem Partnership (ESP).
