Dr. Sanjaya Acharya

Senior Research Fellow

Dr.Sanjaya Acharya is a Senior Research Fellow at CGED-Nepal. Previously, he worked as the Professor of Economics at Ritsumeikan University, Shiga, Japan and before that Associate Professor of Economics at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. Sanjaya also led several research projects at New ERA, Kathmandu, from 1995 to 2011, along with several independent consulting assignments. He holds a Master’s degree in Development Economics from International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Netherlands, and two doctorate degrees – one from Hokkaido University, Japan, and another from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He received the European Association for Comparative Economics Society (EACES) bi-annual best doctoral dissertation award for the years 2006-2007. He is the author of the book Pro-poor Growth and Liberalization in Developing Economies published by Routledge in 2012. Moreover, he has authored about two dozens of articles published in high level peer-reviewed international journals, including Economic Systems, Economic Modelling, Journal of Policy Modelling, Journal of Economic Policy Reforms, European Journal of Development Research and Socio-economic Planning Sciences. He is the EACES Newsletter Editor and reviewer of many international journals. Sanjaya possesses a wide range of experience working with many international development organisations: these include several UN organisations, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, DFID, GIZ, JICA and others. His specialisation is in analysing socio-economic reforms in developing countries and their impacts on the livelihood of poor people, private sector development, gender and empowerment.
